Negative taken of Dr. John Miller Howard, founder and chairman of the Art Department at Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal (A.M. & N.) College (later named Univ. of Arkansas at Pine Bluff-UABP) for 41 years. Dr. John Miller Howard, the son of Johnnie M. and Lillie Long Howard, was born September 22, 1908 near Lorman, Jefferson County, Mississippi. He died October 1980. A gifted artist and art teacher, his education was received at Alcorn College in Lorman, Jefferson County, Mississippi; Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, New York University in New York City; and Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. He began teaching at A.M. & N. in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas in 1939. Honors he received during his lifetime include: the first African American to win top prize in the oil painting category at the Arkansas Artists Association; John Hope Award for oil landscape at the National Negro Artists Association; Arkansas Arts Center purchase of two of his paintings for their permanent collection; having a scholarship named for him at UAPB. Organization membership includes St. John A.M.E. Church, the Twentieth Century Club, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was created by an act of the State Legislature in 1873 as a land grant institution for blacks. The Branch Normal College opened 27 Sept. 1875 with seven students and Joseph Carter Corbin as professor. Ten baccalaureate degrees were awarded from 1882 to 1894.
